Bulgarian rose oil
(Oleum rosae), the etherial oil obtained from fresh flowers of various rose species, is as precious and expensive as gold. Roses have been cultivated in Bulgaria on the sunny southern slopes of the Balkan mountain range near Kazanlik and Karvolo for 250 years. It takes between five and six thousand kilos of rose leaves to produce just 1 kilo of rose oil. Rose oil is prized by aromatherapists because of its calming and harmonising properties.
